 Hay muchas causas por las cuales se pueden perder los datos: robo (ni modo), daño mecánico/físico (por caidas, especialmente con laptops y discos duros externos), virus (se destruye o corrompe la información o ya no deja entrar al sistema operativo), 'sticktion' (esto es cuando se queda pegado el brazo lector al plato y ya no puede 'estacionarse'), el uso diario también puede causar sectores malos (y de estos, como en un disco de música de vinilo, muy dificil recuperarlo). Hay casos en los cuales no se puede recuperar datos, tal como daño físico en los platos.

 There are many reasons why data could be lost: stolen goods (sorry!), physical/mechanical damage (mainly due to falling laptops or external hard drives), virus (data gets corrupted or destroyed or your OS won't boot anymore), 'sticktion' (this is when the reader arm gets stuck on the platters and it can't park anymore), daily wear and tear could also cause bad sectors (and like on vinyl music records, once it's scratched, it is very difficult to restore). There are cases where data is lost forever, like when damage to the platters has been done.
